Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, itch.io

Places you buy PC games. itch.io is the outlier in scale but the most important one for small independent releases and game jams.

Streaming platforms

Twitch, Kick, YouTube Gaming, DLive

Places you watch other people play. Kick is the newest and arrived by aggressively signing streamers away from Twitch.

Subscription services

Game Pass, PS Plus, EA Play, Ubisoft+

Subscription services — you rent access to a library rather than owning the titles.

Discontinued

Mixer, Stadia, OnLive, Miiverse

All discontinued. Mixer was Microsoft's Twitch competitor, shut down in 2020 despite enormous exclusivity deals; Miiverse was Nintendo's social network; OnLive was cloud gaming roughly a decade too early. Stadia belongs here too, which is precisely why we did not use it.
